I stumbled across this building on the outskirts of Stromness on a Summer evening stroll when working in Orkney in the summer of 2012. It had been a long day and I was tired, so I hastily snapped a photo, almost over my shoulder, just to record the moment. The sun was going down and everything was taking on hyper-real colours.
Some time later I happened back on the photo and feel instantly that I wanted to get it down in paint. In the interim time I’d been developing new techniques using spray paint and salvaged textiles and knew it would work perfectly to get across the remembered textures of the foliage and hazy, lilac hued sky. At a final stage I used a very fine ink pen to pick out some details with expressive marks. The whole canvas has been harmonised by several layers of a high quality varnish.
On a dee edge box frame canvas with the painting extending onto all sides. Signed on the rear and ready to hang. Dispatched with a Certificate of Authenticity.
