14 x 36″ (40 x 40 x 4 cm)
Original painting in acrylic on a linen canvas, framed.
Inspired by my visits to the Stoneworks Early Archetecture Project in Caithness, where community members and archaeologists worked to recreate sections of replica ancient broch tower wall.
Inspiration for this piece came from colour sketches made on site. I became very interested in the patterns inside the walls as volunteers laid stones to build wall height – the shapes, the colours, the individual ‘signatures’ of different workers and the way they laid down pieces, the interaction of the stones to give strength and integrity to the structure… I thought some very graceful and fluid patterns were formed amongst the stonework – but equally these are a visual metaphor for co-operation, relationships, etc.
