Gryphaea

2023

I took a fossil hunting trip to the Isle of Skye, where (in the Jurassic-age rocks around Broadford) I encountered mass death plates of Gryphaea fossils. These extinct shallow-water bivalves lived mainly in the Triassic and Jurassic, and were somewhat like oysters.

Back at home reviewing photo’s I had taken, I was intrigued by the randomised patterns formed by the fossil shells in the bedrock. I played with digitising these patterns, and layered and combined them into an abstract composition.

Video of the creation process.
