Pebbles

2022 onwards

The smooth rounded forms of pebbles on a beach are something that seem to have universal appeal. Children and beach-goers pocket them as manuport objects or souvenirs. Dishes of pebbles line the windowsill of every coastal holiday cottage as decor. People take them and paint them, often with message for others to find. Others stack them at coastal spots, choosing to alter the environment around them – and often partaking in the making art in a way they wouldn’t otherwise in their lives.

Pebbles are familiar to all, yet also hold a degree of mystery to all but the geologist: –
What are they made of?
Why are they the shapes that they are?
How did they get here?
Where did they come from?

I began making these digital collages a couple of years ago, to celebrate the diversity of alike objects.

Each ‘pebble’ is created by layering and editing elements from previous digital works, as well as photographs of paintings made with traditional media – recycling them into something new, and allowing works with diversity of colour pattern and texture to be built up in a spontaneous way.
