Patterns

2024

These abstract digital paintings started – as all the most interesting projects do – with play, and the question ‘how much is too much?’

As artists we are so very often focused on what is pleasant, beautiful and balanced. But what amount of colour, pattern and texture can be combined in close co-habitation before the result is an unharmonious conflict of fighting elements?

Of course, the viewer has the last word in whether I managed to preserve harmony (and if I am honest, in some cases I found myself shying away from the original brief of ‘pushing the limits’, perhaps through habit, and wandering off to somewhere more conventionally pleasing), but I often find enjoy playing in the that uncomfortable, grey area where compatibility and ‘overwhelm’ butt-up against each other (and therefore where ‘success’ and ‘disaster’ arguably meets).

Created digitally (whilst on health-enforced on bed rest) on an iPhone, with Procreate. Maximised for small-scale viewing.
