Fossil Coral Abstract

2023

Poring through rocks in the studio that I had collected, that were filled with fossilised Siphonodendron corals, it really intrigued me the way the traces of coral tentacles formed dots and dashes, depending on their exact placement in the rock (relative to its outer surface).

It inspired me to work with similar clouds of dashes and dots. Also, to further to ask the question ‘what if the rock were sliced into transparent sections (rather like petrological thin sections, but still on a macroscopic level) and then stuck back together?’ Of course, everything is possible when working digitally!

After a couple of rejected attempts, I arrived at something I was happy with. As I often do, I found myself going back to stained-glass and the work of 20th Cent’ artist John Piper.

I’ve included a video detailing the process (that I made for Instagram).
